Film Seminar on Hitch
Continuing the Analysis of Ivan Yefremov’s Thais of Athens
Paradoxically, one of the best illustrations of the ideas embedded in the ancient storyline of the novel is the Hollywood romantic comedy Hitch. It is a brilliant snapshot of our “sleeping” level of consciousness.
The problem between the Masculine and the Feminine is not a lack of love but an excess of fear and techniques. At the first, “sleeping” level of consciousness, people exist in a state of mutual fear and ego-driven conflict. They are not seeking a true encounter; they are seeking a resource or an ideal.
A man may be capable of devotion, admiration, and generosity, yet fail to see a real person in the Feminine. Instead, he sees a function, a projection, or a prize to be won. In response to this devaluation, a woman rebels. She adopts the mindset that “all men are jerks” and retreats into independence or emotional detachment.
This is an ego-defense game that guarantees people never encounter what is genuine. Ultimately, it leads both sides to flee from true intimacy.
The Film’s Story as Educational Material
Hitch (2005)
Starring: Will Smith, Eva Mendes
Alex “Hitch” Hitchens is a legendary dating consultant who secretly helps men win the hearts of the women of their dreams. Having been hurt in his youth, Hitch is convinced that love is simply a collection of techniques. His methods work flawlessly until he meets Sara, a cynical journalist. Their conflict becomes a collision of two defensive positions and serves as an excellent case study for understanding what a genuine human encounter truly is.
Running parallel to the main story is the case of Albert Brennaman, an awkward yet sincere accountant who hires Hitch to help him win the heart of billionaire Allegra Cole. Unlike Hitch, who relies on carefully designed strategies, Albert constantly deviates from the script and acts from his authentic nature. It is precisely when he ignores the calculated advice of his coach and chooses to act with sincerity and humanity—simply being himself—that he succeeds.
During the seminar, we will discover that success comes not because of sophisticated techniques and carefully crafted strategies but despite them—when a person reduces the influence of the Ego and dares to act as a Human Being.
Seminar Format
A film seminar is a fast, emotionally engaging transformational experience. It serves as a continuation of the main seminar and functions as its inseparable second part.
Over the course of three hours, we will analyze the film and uncover its existential and archetypal meanings. You will learn to recognize, within what appears to be a simple romantic comedy, a complex model of human behavior.
As a powerful cinematic metaphor, this film creates a deep emotional imprint that allows the educational material from the literary seminar to be absorbed into the subconscious with maximum effectiveness, becoming a ready-to-use behavioral model.
This is the purpose of Apeiron’s film seminars.
