Alexey Arestovych – Psychological training based on the analysis of the film The Matrix

The film presents reality as a three-layered construct, where reality and virtuality, which differ in their functions and essence, form the foundation of our world. The hero’s journey through reality is worth exploring because you yourself are such a hero. In this film seminar, you will learn how to become stronger than reality.

A film seminar on the film “The Matrix” with Alexey Arestovich: a continuation of the seminar “Consciousness and Reality”
Is our reality just an illusion, carefully designed and maintained by omnipotent forces, like in the movie The Matrix?
Expanding on the theme of the “Consciousness and Reality” seminar, we will analyze the cult film “The Matrix” to understand how beliefs and perceptions can be manipulated and changed, reflecting philosopher Willard Quine’s provocative thesis about the malleability of our understanding of truth.
The choice of this film is not accidental.
The Matrix not only demonstrates complex philosophical concepts through spectacular cinema, but also serves as a bridge between abstract theories and real-world perceptions, which will be our focus in the film seminar.
Plot of the film
The Matrix (1999) is a science fiction action film directed by the Wachowski brothers from their own screenplay.
The leading roles were played by Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss.
The film depicts a future where the reality people believe in is an illusion created by artificial intelligence to control humanity.
The main character, programmer Neo, discovers the truth about the Matrix and joins a group of rebels.
Neo’s awakening and his journey to realizing his unique abilities form the central storyline.
The film is replete with dynamic action scenes and deep philosophical reflections on the nature of reality and freedom of choice.
Main themes and conflicts
In 1954, philosopher Willard Quine introduced the idea that the truth of any statement can be supported by adequate adjustments elsewhere in our belief system, which is known as Quine’s thesis.
This principle is contrasted with Karl Popper’s ideas on the need for falsifiability of scientific hypotheses, emphasizing that scientific theories do not necessarily have to be rejected when new data appears, but can be adapted to maintain them as true.
From the statement formulated by Quine follows the non-falsifiability of fundamental scientific theories and the possibility of their endless corrections on the basis of new facts, without directly rejecting them as untenable.
Translated into the language of psychology, the situation is as follows:
A person’s picture of the world, as he receives new data, can remain inertial, relying on the same fundamental assumptions as before receiving new data.
In simple terms, an atheist can remain an atheist no matter how much logical, historical, or empirical evidence he is given for the existence of God, just as a believer can remain a believer despite the same amount of evidence to the contrary.
However, we know from experience that psychological crises, as a result of which the picture of the world completely changes, are a very typical phenomenon for the human race.
This means that there is a logic and laws according to which fundamental changes in a person’s (and society’s) ideas about reality can change radically and become the basis for the creation of a new person (and society), producing a fundamental revolution in his life and ideas about reality.
The Matrix has caused a significant stir in the field of philosophical thought, being an artistic continuation of discussions about the nature of reality (at least psychological).
In the film, the reality people perceive is a creation of artificial intelligence, similar to Quine’s method of altering beliefs or theories to maintain truth in a scientific system. The inhabitants of “The Matrix” accept the virtual world as true due to manipulation of their perceptions.
The protagonist, Neo, begins to doubt the reality of the world around him, leading to his complete transformation and realization of truth. This moment is similar to the change in scientific theories or the adjustment of beliefs in accordance with new data.
As with the psychological crises mentioned by Quine, the characters in The Matrix experience radical changes in their perception of the world, which is analogous to fundamental changes in beliefs in real life.
We will analyze the film in three main areas:
1. Cinematic Technique: We will refine our artistic taste and explore how cinema helps us perceive deep psychological processes and social dynamics.
2. Personal Experience: We will understand how to apply what we have seen in our lives.
3. Cultural Context: We will analyze and discuss how the film reflects and simultaneously influences social norms and values, shaping our relationships and self-identification.
Practical application of the film seminar
A film seminar isn’t a popcorn screening. It’s a full-fledged workshop, where film becomes the key to understanding the profound theories of a traditional seminar.
This is a serious work of the mind, where the analysis of each film is transformed into a textbook.
We decipher the film like a code, trying to penetrate into the very depths of the human psyche and social dramas.
The film for the film seminar is selected with surgical precision to explore specific themes that we dissect like complex mechanisms in the seminar.
At the film seminar, we will explore the hero’s journey and ask ourselves the following questions:
– How are our ideas about reality structured?
– What are they conditioned by?
– How, under what conditions, and by what laws do they change?
– How does our worldview exist and how does it transform?
– What are the causes of such changes and what consequences do they cause?
Particular attention will be paid to the process of “awakening,” symbolically depicted in the film, which allows one to see the world as it really is and begin to use one’s superpowers.
