Dean Somerset – Advanced Core Training Seminar
Core training typically comprises mat based exercises, 50 forms of crunches, or planks until your face falls off. In truth, core training comprises a very deep well of intricately involved muscles, joints, systems, and positions. It could be said that everything from your ribs to your pelvis is the core, and any exercise that uses this area even distantly could be considered core training, and either setting you up for success of failure depending on how it’s trained.
Consider how many people go to the gym and either don’t know how to breathe during different exercises or breathe with completely inefficient patterns that are limiting their strength at best, and potentially setting them up for some serious injuries.
Core training is very complicated, but it can be made very simple with some very basic tenets to be aware of with your exercises of choice. Are you training for recovery? Speed? Maximum strength? Creating a super-stiff spine? They all have specific training methods, and common variables you can adjust on the fly to produce the results you want.

These simple Laws of Core Training held true in all cases, and I’m going to show you how to use them to your advantage.
First, My Own “Back” Story
Dean Somerset Advanced Core Training Back StoryI’m not immune to my own bad habits. Growing up active, I was injured a lot from doing the wrong things with no guidance. At my worst, I wasn’t able to walk and had to use a walker to get around campus while at university. At my best, I’ve managed to deadlift 455 pounds. This was after doctors told me I’d likely not walk by the time I was 30 due to a serious low back injury.
Once I figured out how core stabilization played into my own issues, I saw immediate improvements in my ability to move pain free, my strength improved dramatically, and coming from a point where I couldn’t even bend forward to touch my knees, I’ve been able to do the splits with no pain or problems. My clients also saw the same benefits time after time. It was so pronounced I took all previous core work out of my programs because it just wasn’t working as well.
Why Everyone Needs Core Strength & Core Stability
Core strength and stability is something everyone needs to produce a forceful movement, whether that’s bending down to tie your shoes, lifting a bag of groceries out of the car, creating first-step speed or lifting your max in the gym. Core stability means having the ability to preserve the position of your spine while other body parts, like your shoulders and hips, do the heavy lifting instead. The spine acts like a buffer driving force from one end to the other, without bending or breaking in the process.
