Coaching on Advanced Topics in Personal Finance

This Specialty Toolkit has eight lessons covering specific coaching skills and practices including:
#1. Coaching on Student Loans
The world of student loans is quite complex so it’s no wonder our clients can easily feel overwhelmed. Learn the differences between the various types of student loans so you can pass that knowledge onto your clients, while helping them analyze their options and determine their best repayment strategy. But, of course, coaching isn’t just about passing on information so you’ll also learn how to effectively coach your clients on their student loans. Knowing how your client thinks and feels about their student loans, along with the specific numbers and options available to them will help you devise the best strategy. You’ll also receive a list of some of our favorite student loan resources that you can use with your clients too!
This lesson is 55 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#2. Coaching on Home Buying
Buying a home is an important life milestone. It’s also a big decision that can have an even bigger impact on your client’s financial position. You play an important role in how your clients navigate a home buying decision and it starts before they even start house hunting. In this lesson, you’ll see how to guide your clients toward clarifying their vision and desires for their home while educating them about the process and what they can expect. You’ll learn a process for bringing intentionality to this largely-emotional financial transaction. Finally, you’ll learn how to help your clients see exactly what buying a home will look and feel like in advance — so they’re prepared financially, mentally and emotionally.
This lesson is 32 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#3. Coaching on HELOC vs Second Mortgage
Regardless of your views on leveraging the equity in a home, you will certainly field questions about these options from your clients. Learn the key differences between these options and how to explain them effectively to your clients. This lesson will help you guide your client through determining what their own views are on these two options and which, if either, is a viable option for their goals.
This lesson is 26 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#4. Coaching on Investing
As a financial coach, you are not an investment advisor and don’t offer advice on financial products. You may be feeling nervous about what you can and cannot talk to your clients about and when it comes to investment advising, you’re wondering where the line is that you should not cross.
In this lesson, you will learn the basics of investing from an educational standpoint, but your role as a coach is so much more than that. The conversation you have with your clients about investing often looks quite different from what they might have with an advisor. Learn how to talk to your client about investing from a coaching perspective rather than an advising one. You will be given questions and examples to help guide your coaching conversation and help your clients better understand their own personal perspective on investing, their desires, their experiences and the next steps that are potential options for them — all without crossing the line into giving investment advice.
This lesson is 51 minutes and contains 2 handouts.
#4b. Coaching on Investing: Choosing an Investment Path
When your client prepares to start investing, there are a few different paths they may take depending on how much involvement they want to take in making investment decisions versus how much help they want to get from a financial advisor. Learn how to coach your clients through making this decision and preparing them for that first meeting with a financial advisor if they choose to work with one.
This lesson is 49 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#5. Coaching on Life Insurance
You may not offer life insurance policies or products as a financial coach, but you still play an important role in this area of your client’s financial life. Being able to ask questions to gain a basic understanding of their foundational knowledge helps you to determine if this is an area where more support is needed. Or perhaps they have a policy but can’t tell you why they have it, how much it is, etc. You can remove their uncertainty so they are able to better advocate for themselves when discussing their insurance needs with a professional.
This lesson is 37 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#6. Coaching on Health Insurance
The cost of medical costs and health insurance premiums is one area gutting our clients and their ability to get ahead financially. Oftentimes, clients enroll in workplace policies purely by guessing or they spend money because they don’t know what’s covered or how to seek reimbursement. Gain a deeper understanding of health insurance options, how they work, and what to look for so you can guide your clients confidently.
This lesson is 62 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#7. Coaching on Debt Settlement or Negotiation
Regardless of your views on debt settlement or negotiation as a strategy for eliminating debt, you will field questions about these options from your clients. A client may come to you already in one of these programs, or show interest in using one while coaching with you. Learn the key differences between these options and how to talk about them with your clients. You’ll also learn a specific process for coaching your clients so they can make this decision with confidence.
This lesson is 62 minutes and contains 1 handout.
#8. Coaching on Bankruptcy
There is a lot of emotion and confusion wrapped up in the decision to file bankruptcy. Your role in both educating and also helping the client to navigate the financial and emotional aspects of this decision are incredibly important. How your client makes the decision can determine how they feel about themselves once the bankruptcy is final. Learn how to guide a client through making this decision through knowledge, self awareness and what they think is best for themselves.
