A film seminar on the film “Fight Club” with Alexey Arestovich: a continuation of the seminar “Ruthlessness”
Our behavior, understanding of the world and our own self are formed under the influence of society.
But what if we can change that?
My goal is to help you learn to independently identify these aspects of your life and manage your attention.
Each of us conveys two images of ourselves: the image we strive for and the image that society expects of us.
Often the confrontation between these images of our psyche becomes so intense that the real person is lost in oblivion.
“Fight Club” is a film constructed in accordance with this symbolic load – about the rebellion of a real person against the phantoms of his own ideas and the ideas of others about him.
In this film workshop, we’ll explore how this mechanism works and how to free yourself from it.
The key is cultivating ruthlessness as a prerequisite for freeing your attention and beginning to manage it independently.
Only by freeing your attention can you dig out your true self from under a pile of imposed phantoms.
Plot of the film
Fight Club (1999, USA) is a psychological thriller directed by David Fincher, starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt.
The plot centers on Edward Norton’s character, a depersonalized man dissatisfied with his routine life in a consumerist world.
In search of meaning, he and Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden found Fight Club, a secret community where people can escape the pressures of social expectations.
Main themes and conflicts
The film criticizes modern consumer society, where material things determine human value and self-identification.
The protagonists fight against this culture, striving to free themselves from material chains in order to find their true individuality.
This process is explored through extreme situations, including combat and other forms of confrontation.
Through Norton and Pitt’s characters, the film explores the crisis of male identity in the modern world.
The concept of the protagonist’s divided personality raises questions about reality and illusion in his perception of himself and the world.
We will analyze the film in three main areas:
1. Cinematic technique – enhancing our artistic taste by exploring how cinema helps us perceive deep psychological processes and social dynamics.
2. Personal experience – understanding how to apply what we see in our lives.
3. Cultural context – examining and discussing how the film reflects and simultaneously influences social norms and values, shaping our relationships and self-identification.
Objectives of the film seminar
The film seminar is a unique combination of cinema and education, where each film is carefully selected for analysis and discussion of specific topics.
The film workshop is not a shared film viewing, but a full-fledged seminar where film serves as a basis for exploring complex psychological and social concepts.
This comprehensive approach allows you to not only gain new knowledge during the film seminar, but also gain a deeper understanding of the theory previously discussed in the seminar.
Each session, whether a workshop or film seminar, is complete and self-contained, giving you the freedom to join any session.
In this film workshop, we will explore in detail the following key aspects:
• How certain plot points can help free up attention. You will see that breaking free from the influence of societal norms and expectations can be not only possible, but also highly effective.
• We will pay special attention to Pitt’s character, who serves as the main driver of change for Norton’s character. We will discuss how the interaction between these characters leads to meaningful transformations, helping Norton to reject the roles imposed by society and find his true self.
• We will examine how society’s demands to be “perfect” give rise to internal and external conflicts, and how these conflicts affect life.
• How the struggle for personal identity and place in the world is reflected through the characters’ actions and relationships in the context of Fight Club.
This film analysis will provide new tools for self-discovery and expand your understanding of cinema.
